Vocabulary: week 13

subtle - cunning, clever; crafty or sly; devious; difficult to analyze
"a subtle understanding/meaning/liar/smile"

vehement - characterized by rancor (hatred/bitterness) or anger; intense or passionate; marked by or full of energy or emotion; strong; intense emotion
"vehement desire/hostility/enthusiasm"

zealous - diligent; devoted; filled with or motivated by interest and enthusiasm; desire & energy




His zealous efforts for becoming better and better in downhill racing showed. People admire him for it and wish they were as dedicated and motivated as he is.

adverse - opposite; opposing one's interests/desires; unfavorable
"adverse circumstances/feelings"


averse - having dislike to try new things/ideas; not used to; unwilling; reluctant


Normally people are averse to trying new and exciting things, but Aaron isn't. People realized that when he jumped off a building after someone dared him to.

blatant - unpleasantly loud and noisy; unmistakeable/undeniable; without any attempt at concealment
"blatant disregard of the law"

alleged -declared or stated; supposed suspect
"the alleged murderer could not be found"

aggravate - to make worse or more severe; to intensify in an annoying way

discreet -modest; wise self-restraint; very careful; meticulous
"a discreet detective"

factoid -a piece of unverified or inaccurate info that is presented in the press as factual; often as a part of a publicity effort and is mistakingly accepted as true; a brief somewhat interesting fact


flout - to treat with disdain/dislike; disdainful remark or act; insult
"to flout the rules of authority"

forte -a strong talent/skill/ or strength/specialty of a person



The womans forte was to play the guitar. All night she passed by different people, different tables with a smile as she played and played. They not only did that, but they sang as well. They were truly talented.


disinterested -unbiased by personal interest because they are not interested; indifferent
"a disinterested decision by the judge"





Judge Jody based her decisions off of being disinterested before the alleged suspects walked in to the room. She did her job well for doing so.
